Anton Astapovich, chairman of the Belarusian Voluntary Society for Historic and Cultural Heritage Protection, told reporters in Minsk on Monday that he would file a suit against the Ministry of Culture over its failure to abide by heritage protection regulations.

Over the years, the Society has suggested including many historic buildings in the State Historic and Cultural Heritage List, and the ministry has given no reply to 18 of those proposals, Mr. Astapovich said. This is a violation of regulations that should not go unpunished, he added.

The ministry is simply not interested to extend the list because it does not want additional responsibility, Mr. Astapovich said.

He warned that historic structures in Belarus would continue to be destroyed unless the authorities granted them historic heritage status.
