The protracted crisis involving contraband balloons from Belarus has led the government to declare a nationwide state of emergency. At the same time, Minister of Internal Affairs Uladzislau Kandratovich has been appointed head of state operations under the emergency conditions, reportsLRT.

According to the draft resolution, a state of emergency is being introduced throughout the country due to balloons launched from Belarus, which transport contraband and pose a threat to Lithuania's national security. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) emphasizes that the introduction of the state of emergency will not create inconveniences for the public, as the measures will be precise, proportionate, and aimed exclusively at the organizers and perpetrators of illegal activities.

In a government note, the MIA explains that during hybrid attacks from Belarus, the balloons pose a threat to Lithuanian civil aviation and disrupt the operation of Vilnius Airport. Due to this, the agency notes, the transportation of passengers and cargo by air becomes impossible, leading to significant financial losses and reputational damage. The state of emergency status, according to the MIA, will allow agencies to coordinate actions more closely and, if necessary, involve military units.

On Monday, on LRT radio, Police Commissioner General Artūras Paulauskas stated that such a step could help law enforcement more effectively prevent and investigate crimes related to air contraband.
