US suspends visa issuance for citizens of 75 countries — Russia, Brazil, Thailand, and others
Starting January 21, 2026, the U.S. State Department is suspending visa processing for 75 countries, including Somalia, Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, Brazil, Nigeria, Thailand, and others, Fox News reports . It is not yet known whether this concerns Belarus.

This decision has been introduced to restrict the issuance of visas to individuals who, in the opinion of the authorities, may become a burden on public welfare. The suspension will be indefinite until the State Department reviews the procedure for vetting and selecting candidates.
Particular attention is now being paid to Somalia, which came into focus after a large fraud scheme was uncovered in Minnesota. Prosecutors found widespread abuse of public assistance programs, primarily involving Somalis and Somali-Americans.
According to the new guidelines, consular officers will negatively review applications from individuals who may rely on public assistance. Factors considered include age, health status, English proficiency, financial situation, and potential needs for long-term medical care. Individuals who have previously received financial aid or resided in state institutions, as well as elderly individuals or those who are overweight, may receive a negative response.
A State Department spokesperson noted that this measure will be used to limit entry into the U.S. for those who may become a burden on society and utilize social programs. Exceptions will be very limited and only possible after a thorough review for compliance with "public charge" requirements.
In past administrations, this principle was applied differently, and during the Trump presidency in 2019, the term "public charge" was expanded to cover a broader range of public assistance. Later, parts of these rules were blocked in courts and indirectly reversed by the Joe Biden administration.
