Life sentence given to killer of former Japanese prime minister
A court in the Japanese city of Nara sentenced 45-year-old Tetsuya Yamagami to life imprisonment.
He was accused of assassinating former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in July 2022.
Shinzo Abe was fatally wounded on July 8, 2022, in the city of Nara, where he was speaking at an election rally. He died in hospital without regaining consciousness. He was 67 years old. Abe served as Prime Minister of Japan from 2006-2007 and 2012-2020.
Tetsuya Yamagami explained his actions as revenge against a religious group from which his family allegedly suffered. He believed Abe was connected to it.
