Former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer made a resonant statement: Europe needs its own nuclear weapons, as the American nuclear umbrella is no longer reliable.

Former German Foreign Minister from the Green Party, Joschka Fischer, openly spoke in favor of Europe's nuclear rearmament.
"Europe must do this, because American security guarantees are no longer reliable from now on. Germany certainly bears responsibility for leadership in Europe, but always only together with others," Fischer said in an interview with Tagesspiegel.
He proposes joint nuclear weapons for all EU countries.
According to him, it would be a serious mistake to consider nuclear weapons as an exclusively national task for Germany:
"Germany must never act alone again — never. We need our European partners."
Fischer also said that if he were young today, he would join the Bundeswehr:
"Times have changed. We are threatened. We must defend ourselves. I never imagined I would ever say that. My entire political career rather indicated the opposite."
