The Chairman of the Vitsebsk City Executive Committee, Aliaksei Heroyeŭ, during a meeting with the staff of one of the enterprises, shared plans for the reconstruction of the "Belarus" shopping center in Vitsebsk. This shopping center was so severely damaged by a fire in December 2024 that simply repairing it was deemed impractical.
Instead of the old building, it was decided to create a completely new shopping and entertainment center.
“This will be a modern multifunctional building. The key concept is the creation of a dynamic, viable, and socially significant object that will operate 24/7. The multifunctional building will house retail and office premises, a hotel, a cinema, a food court, a restaurant, service facilities, and a children's entertainment center,” — stated Aliaksei Heroyeŭ.
A large fire at the "Belarus" shopping center in Vitsebsk occurred on December 13, 2024. At that time, the first floor of the building caught fire. As a result, 215 people were evacuated, and 21 units of equipment and 90 Ministry of Emergency Situations employees were involved in extinguishing the fire. Approximately 2000 square meters were engulfed in flames, and it was only extinguished around 9:00 PM after more than four hours of work.
As a result of the incident, 20 people were injured. The preliminary investigation revealed many violations of fire safety rules. Problems were found in electrical networks, illegal store redevelopments, and a number of other shortcomings.
