On March 5, two drones launched from Iranian territory attacked the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan. One of them hit the terminal building of the international airport, which is located approximately ten kilometers from the border, the second fell near a school in the village of Shakharabad. As a result, two people were injured, and the airport building sustained damage.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan called this attack a gross violation of international law. The Iranian ambassador was summoned to receive a note of protest, and Baku demanded that Tehran conduct an investigation and provide guarantees that similar incidents would not recur.

The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan stated that attacks on civilian infrastructure would not go unanswered and promised to take measures to protect the country's sovereignty, population, and important facilities.

At the same time, Ilham Aliyev earlier personally visited the Iranian embassy in Baku to express condolences over the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died as a result of American-Israeli strikes.

As reported by the Financial Times, even before the current crisis in the Middle East, a war plan was developed in Iran, which included strikes on energy facilities in neighboring countries with the aim of creating chaos in the region and putting pressure on the West.
