"While affirming the right of the Islamic Republic of Iran to respond to this aggression by all available means in accordance with international norms and laws, the movement calls on the brothers in Iran to avoid striking neighboring countries," Hamas said in a statement.

Hamas, which has been at war with Israel in the Gaza Strip for two years, also called on the international community to achieve an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Earlier, the group condemned the killing of Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei, calling it a "savage crime."

Iran states that its attacks are directed against American facilities within Gulf countries, not against the neighbors themselves, but many strikes have hit civilian infrastructure.

Earlier in the conflict, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian apologized for the "damage" caused to neighboring states — although such strikes later continued.
