According to the Financial Times, French diplomats' attempt in February 2026 to negotiate with Moscow about Europe's participation in peace talks ended in an insult. Putin's aide Yury Ushakov rejected the EU's proposal in an obscene manner.

In February, French President's national security advisors Emmanuel Bonne and Bertrand Buchwalter visited Moscow for talks with Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov.

According to sources from FT, French diplomats tried to convince the Kremlin to allow Kyiv's European allies to the negotiating table so that Europe would not be left out of deciding the region's fate.

"Ushakov's response to this question was essentially: 'Sorry, actually no, we don't want to, go f*ck yourselves'," a high-ranking European diplomat said.

The Kremlin openly demonstrates its disregard for Europe in matters of achieving peace, banking on direct agreements with Washington. Dmitry Peskov confirmed this, stating that the French representative "did not bring any positive signals," and that Europeans allegedly only push Ukraine towards war.
