The new vehicle unexpectedly became a hit among professional drivers—a group traditionally very difficult to impress with technological innovations. The Semi is capable of traveling up to 800 kilometers on a single charge and recharging its energy to 60% in just 30 minutes. What else is remarkable about it, The Wall Street Journal reports .

When Tesla announced its plans for the Semi almost a decade ago, it was seen as a chance to transform the heavy freight transport sector—much like the affordable and versatile Model 3 helped popularize electric cars.

However, since then, the company's focus has shifted to areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous Cybercab. Additionally, the American automotive and transport market largely moved away from battery power after the Trump administration canceled EV subsidies and eased fuel economy rules.

Nevertheless, the economic benefits and convenience are compelling: although the Semi costs about $300,000 (twice as expensive as a diesel equivalent), it is approximately $100,000 cheaper than other electric trucks on the market.

The experience of early testers shows that Tesla's innovative solutions address real problems for long-haul truckers. For example, the central seating position in the cabin and the monitor system completely eliminate blind spots, allowing easy maneuvering of the 12-meter trailer even in the most challenging situations.

The Tesla Semi also stands out from competitors with its technical specifications. The company states that the truck can charge to 60% in 30 minutes—about four times faster than other electric semi-trucks, although still slower than a conventional diesel refuel.

An important advantage is its range. Tesla offers two versions of the Semi: with a range of about 520 and 800 kilometers on a single charge. Meanwhile, main competitors from Volvo and Nikola provide only about 360 kilometers. This allows for either multiple medium-distance trips per day or one long route.

During testing, the truck demonstrated excellent power: it is capable of transporting about 11 tons of cargo over mountain passes without significant loss of performance, while providing smooth acceleration.

Despite the high cost, interest in the Tesla Semi remains high. The company plans to start mass deliveries from its Nevada factory this summer. It is estimated that 5,000 to 15,000 such vehicles will be produced in 2026, and volumes could subsequently grow to 50,000 per year.

The transition to electric traction promises significant cost optimization for businesses. Electric trucks have fewer moving parts than diesel ones, so they require significantly less maintenance. Transport companies have already calculated that with a full transition to electric vehicles, they would need only one mechanic instead of five for a fleet of 40 vehicles. The environmental aspect also plays an important role in the model's attractiveness.

However, on the path to the Semi's full dominance, serious challenges remain, the main one being the lack of infrastructure. Public charging stations currently do not have sufficient power to serve large fleets across the country. To address this problem, Tesla has already announced the creation of its own network of fast chargers along major freight corridors in Texas, California, and the Southeast, with openings planned starting this summer.
