According to court documents, the charge was officially filed on March 30, with the first court hearing scheduled for June 12 in Newmarket, Ontario. York Regional Police reported that on March 14, officers responded to a call about an assault at a local community center in Markham, and the victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, the Toronto Sun reports.
Court documents allege Grabovski assaulted Warren Cooper.
According to the Toronto Star, the charge is related to an alleged conflict between coaches after an under-15 playoff game earlier this month, which featured the Markham Waxers and York-Simcoe Express teams.
Team websites indicate that Grabovski is the head coach of the Waxers, and Cooper is the head coach of the Express.
Responding to questions about possible disciplinary action, the Ontario Hockey Association stated that it is aware of the situation and "does not condone such behavior," adding that it would not comment further while the police investigation is ongoing.
As a condition of his release, Grabovski is prohibited from contacting Cooper or visiting any locations where Cooper is known to be.
Grabovski, 42, played 340 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2008 to 2013, and a total of 534 NHL games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals, and New York Islanders. He retired in 2019, reports "Belarusian Hockey".
