Cuba will release 2,010 prisoners as part of a "humanitarian and sovereign gesture," it was announced on Thursday, amid ongoing political pressure from the United States, writes the BBC.

Among those released will be foreign nationals, youth, women, and individuals over 60 years old, according to a statement from the Cuban Embassy in the U.S.

It is also noted that the release occurs "in the context of Holy Week religious celebrations, which is a common practice in our criminal justice system."

This is the second time this year that Cuba has announced the release of prisoners. In March, 51 people were released following negotiations with the Vatican. In 2025, Cuba released 553 people as part of an agreement reached through the mediation of the Vatican and the U.S.

After returning to the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump clearly stated his desire to change Cuba's leadership and imposed an oil blockade, which led to severe fuel shortages and widespread power outages across the country.

Last week, a tanker owned by a Russian company and carrying approximately 730,000 barrels of crude oil became the first oil shipment to arrive at a Cuban port since the beginning of January.
