The United States plans to indict former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, Reuters reports, citing a US Department of Justice official.

According to the agency's source, the timeline for a possible indictment has not yet been determined. However, the official noted that a decision could be made in the near future.

The case against the 94-year-old Castro, brother of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, is expected to be related to downed planes, a Justice Department official said on condition of anonymity.

The case concerns a 1996 incident when Cuban military forces shot down planes belonging to the humanitarian organization Brothers to the Rescue. People on board were killed in the incident.

Cuba's Foreign Ministry did not respond to the agency's request, and a US Justice Department representative also declined to comment.

According to Reuters, the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida is investigating the possibility of bringing criminal charges against high-ranking Cuban officials.

The agency notes that this move comes amidst increased pressure from the Trump administration on Cuba. Washington criticizes the current communist government and seeks its change.
