"This is an escalation, but it is also an escalation that can help lead to the conclusion [of the war]," Trump said at a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the NATO summit in Ankara.
"We are putting a lot of pressure on President Putin. I don't think he likes what's happening," the US President added.
According to Trump, both Moscow and Kyiv would like to end the conflict, but both Putin and Zelenskyy have proven to be "difficult".
"We have stopped many wars. But, I think this [war] is not the easiest. Putin is such a difficult person, Mr. President [Zelenskyy] is a difficult person in his own way," Trump said, referring to Zelenskyy, who was sitting next to him.
He also added that he intends to speak with Putin today.
