What did the Civil Registry Office say?

A girl wanted to have a triple surname: she received a double one in her first marriage, and wanted to add another in her second, writes "Berezinskaya Panorama".

The future husband approached Natallia Belavus, the head of the Civil Registry Office of the Berezino District Executive Committee, with a question about the surname.

— We submitted an application to the Civil Registry Office for marriage registration, my wife wanted to have a triple surname, but they refused her. Is that really correct? She currently has a double surname in her passport (from a previous marriage), and we heard that according to our legislation, when registering a marriage, one can take a double surname. And if you consider that she now has a double surname plus mine. Well, that is, then it would be possible…

However, the specialist's answer was unequivocal: that is not allowed. When registering a marriage, you can choose a common surname, keep your previous one, or take a double surname. By the way, if both spouses plan to take a double surname, they must agree among themselves which part will come first.

— The combination of more than two surnames is not allowed. If your wife already had a double surname before marriage, then with her consent, it will be determined which part of the pre-marital surname will form the new surname. The common surname of the spouses can consist of no more than two surnames, connected by a hyphen in writing, — explained Natallia Belavus.

The assignment of a triple surname upon marriage is not provided for by law.
