Nabokov or Japanese fashion? The name of Conte children's tights caused a scandal on social media
Children's tights from the Belarusian factory Conte became the subject of heated discussion on the social network Threads. The discussion was raised by a user named Alisha, as noted by the publication Blizko.by.
The questions were raised not by the quality or price of the product, but by the name. The tights were named Lolita, which reminded the woman of the heroine from Vladimir Nabokov's scandalous novel of the same name.
“To call children's tights with a stocking top (no questions about the model itself, by the way) 'Lolita' is strange to me. And yes, Nabokov's Lolita's image is precisely this – shoes, thin tights...” — wrote the author.
Opinions in the comments were divided. Some people agreed that such a name for a children's clothing item is unethical, however, there were also those who said not to focus on it, as Lolita is a common female name, and marketers probably did not intend any special subtext.
Furthermore, the name could easily refer to the eponymous street style in Japan, based on the aesthetics of the Victorian era and Rococo style. The look is created around modest, voluminous knee-length dresses or skirts with petticoats, ruffles, lace, and puff sleeves, reminiscent of antique porcelain dolls.
