Champagne from the hot 2026 season will hit harder. France for the first time increases the permissible alcohol content of the drink

Extreme weather conditions are forcing winemakers to revise centuries-old standards for sparkling wine production. Climate change directly affects biochemical processes in grapes, creating a contradiction between natural circumstances and modern consumer tastes.

According to information from the British broadcaster BBC, French regulators approved a temporary increase in the maximum alcohol content in champagne to 15 percent, whereas the previous limit was 13 percent. The reason for this was abnormal heat and drought, which led to exceptionally high sugar levels in the berries, which during fermentation is converted into alcohol thanks to the work of yeast.

Representatives of the industry association Comite Champagne clarify that the change will affect only a small part of this year's harvest. During the secondary fermentation, which provides the bubbles in the drink, some batches of wine exceeded the standard limit, reaching indicators of 13.1 or 13.2 percent. In this regard, an exceptional decision was made to increase the norm a single time for the 2026 season.

This year's grape harvest was the earliest on record in Champagne. The first berries began to be cut in early August, and by mid-month, the campaign became widespread. The 2026 season was marked by historically strong spring frosts, abnormally early flowering, and five heatwaves throughout the summer.

Winemaker Stéphane Vignon from the commune of Verzenay states that the Mediterranean climate is gradually moving north, and the current year marks the beginning of a new climatic cycle. Co-chairman of Comite Champagne, Maxime Toubart, predicts that such an early harvest will become standard practice in ten to fifteen years due to further increases in global temperatures. According to data from the Copernicus climate service, Europe is currently warming twice as fast as the global average, and France has become one of the countries most affected by extreme weather and large-scale forest fires.

Despite objective natural processes, stronger champagne is unlikely to become a marketing advantage in the market. Wine reviewer Jane Anson from Bordeaux points out that modern consumers are increasingly preferring low-alcohol beverages. This trend creates additional tension for producers, who are forced to balance between consumer demands and the results of climate change.

The results of the winemakers' work under the extreme conditions of 2026 will not hit store shelves before 2028, as the technological process requires champagne to be aged for a minimum of fifteen months before sales begin.
