US President Donald Trump suggested that Vladimir Putin could be called a humanitarian after the release of American Steven Hubbard, but noted that overall he would not give the Russian leader an unambiguous assessment.

"I think that in this specific case — in the sense that he allowed a person facing life imprisonment to be released — one could say so. But overall, I would not give definitive assessments," Trump said during a roundtable at the White House, reports CBS.

Earlier, during a meeting with the Russian leader in St. Petersburg, US special envoy Steve Witkoff called Putin a humanitarian. He thanked the president for the American's release and stated that he deserved such an assessment.
