Nyaglyub towels included in UNESCO intangible heritage list
On Tuesday, the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage included the element of intangible cultural heritage "Nyaglyub Textile Tradition of Vetka District, Gomel Region" in the UNESCO List, reportsthe Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The decision was made during the 20th session in New Delhi.
The Nyaglyub textile tradition of Vetka District is a unique phenomenon of Belarusian folk culture, which has preserved archaic features and complex symbols.
"The tradition was formed in the 17th century and encompasses the creation of towels, clothing items, and interior decor using original weaving and embroidery techniques.
Nyaglyub towels have gained particular fame, distinguished by their complex polychrome palette (up to 25 shades) and rich ornamental heritage, numbering over 120 patterns. Geometric and plant ornaments ("krivuli", "pauki", "yablynka") carry encoded wishes for good, love, prosperity, and health. And the uniqueness of the technique, where weaving is done from the reverse side, ensures the inimitable nature of each product," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.
Previously, Nyaglyub towels had already been recognized as an object of historical and cultural heritage of Belarus.
The UNESCO Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage now include seven Belarusian elements.
Previously, they included: the festive Christmas rite "Kalyady Tsars" in the village of Semezhava (2009), "The Celebration in honor of the veneration of the Budslau Mother of God Icon (Budslau Fest)" in the village of Budslau (2018), "Yuryevsky Karagod" in the village of Pahost, Zhytkavichy district (2019), beekeeping culture (2020), straw weaving (2022), "Vytsinanka - traditional paper-cutting art in Belarus" (2024).
