Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, killed in strikes by Israel and the US on February 28, did not appoint a successor, and this issue will be considered by the Assembly of Experts, the Iranian agency Fars reported, citing sources.
After Khamenei's death, the question arose in Tehran whether he had appointed anyone during his lifetime as a succession option. Fars sources reported that Khamenei had not put forward any candidates.
On March 3, Tasnim and Mehr reported that Israel and the US struck the building of the Assembly of Experts in Qom. The building was seriously damaged, and it is unknown whether people were inside at the time of the attack.
According to Mehr, the building is old and not used for meetings by Iran's leadership. The Times of Israel reported that it was supposed to be the location for the election of Iran's new supreme leader.
Fars sources stated that members of the council are holding negotiations on the election of a new leader "in a secure environment," emphasizing that discussions are in their final stages. The council has considered many options, and a decision might be announced very soon — possibly within the next hours or days.
