Most students come to Belarus from Turkmenistan, Sri Lanka is in third place
The number of foreign students in Belarus has increased, and their total share among university and master's degree students reached 10.3% at the beginning of the 2025/26 academic year, according to Belstat.
In total, more than 24.5 thousand foreigners are studying in the country, whereas a year earlier there were about 21 thousand.
The main influx was provided by Turkmenistan: over the past two years, the number of students from there has increased more than 3.5 times — from 2.2 thousand people to almost 8 thousand. This leap allowed Turkmenistan to displace the long-time leader, China, from the first position: currently, just over 7.2 thousand Chinese students are receiving education in our universities.
By the way, Turkmenistan was previously a leader in the export of education to Belarus. The last time the country topped this list was in the 2020/21 academic year (more than 8.7 thousand Turkmen students compared to 3.6 thousand Chinese), after which it ceded the leadership to students from the Celestial Empire for several years.
Following the leaders in the top 5 by the number of students were: Sri Lanka — 2.3 thousand people, Russia, from where almost 1.7 thousand came, and Uzbekistan, which showed a decline to 1.2 thousand people.
The top ten countries from which students also frequently come to study in Belarus included India, Israel, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Azerbaijan.
