Construction and installation work will begin as early as 2026. The first canopies will appear on Nezavisimosti, Peramozhtsau, and Partyzanski avenues, after which work will continue in the city's residential areas.
According to Vladimir Latushkin, head of the road and bridge construction and landscaping department, open staircases are gradually deteriorating due to weather conditions. They are damaged by snow, ice, mechanical cleaning, and rainwater entering the passages from the roadway.
To solve this problem, a standard design for canopies made of metal structures and glass has been developed. Such canopies are intended to provide good visibility while simultaneously protecting the staircases from precipitation.
Work on Peramozhtsau Avenue is planned to be completed by the end of 2026, and the full implementation of the project is scheduled for several years.
City authorities note that the canopies will not only help reduce the costs of maintaining underground passages but also increase safety and comfort for pedestrians. It is expected that thanks to them, there will be less water and ice on the steps, and people will be able to use the passages in more comfortable conditions during rain and snowfalls.
