Monet's painting, unknown to the public, to be exhibited for the first time at auction. A record price is expected.
French artist Claude Monet's painting "Irises" is planned to be sold at a Sotheby's auction in France on October 22. It is preliminarily estimated at 22-30 million euros, writes Bloomberg.
Monet painted this work in 1924-1925 at his home in Giverny, near Paris. It was there that he created his famous series of paintings "Water Lilies". "Irises" is considered one of the masterpieces of the artist's late period.
Sotheby's noted that the painting had never before been exhibited publicly. Its owner, Jeanne Schlumberger, refused to lend the work for exhibitions and kept it in her private Parisian residence.
Thanks to this, the painting has been preserved in excellent condition. There is no varnish on the canvas, and restoration has never been carried out, which is a rarity for a work of this caliber.
The sale price could reach 30 million euros and become a record for France. Until now, the most expensive Monet painting from the "Irises" series was sold at a London auction in 2015 for approximately 13 million euros.
The overall record price for a Monet painting is approximately 96 million euros. It was for this amount that his work "Haystacks" was sold at a Sotheby's auction in New York in 2019.
