A red level air alert was declared in the Panevėžys and Šiauliai districts due to an object that may be a drone. NATO fighters were scrambled, and flights at Kaunas Airport were suspended.
The Lithuanian army reported the danger on the morning of October 18. Residents received warnings on their mobile phones urging them to immediately move to a safe place or shelter.
Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Center, reported that one object was spotted in the airspace. It is located near Panevėžys and is moving. Fighter pilots are observing it and awaiting an opportunity to destroy it.
However, due to weather conditions, it is not yet possible to definitively confirm that it is indeed a drone.
According to the crisis management center, flights to and from Kaunas Airport were banned for the period from 07:05 to 08:00 Lithuanian time. A yellow level air alert was also declared in Kaunas.
A red alert requires immediate hiding in a shelter or other safe place. Authorities will announce the end of the danger separately.
