Ex-KGB Officer Shunievich Appointed Minister of Interior

As most chiefs of law enforcing agencies he was not born in Belarus.

Aliaksandr Lukashenka appointed Ihar Shunievich the Minister of Interior on May 11. The previous Minister Anatol Kuliashou was dismissed from the position.

Before Friday’s appointment, Ihar Shunievich held the position of the First Deputy Minister of the Interior and the Chief of Criminal Police.

Mr. Shunievich, as most chiefs of law enforcement agencies, was born in a country other than Belarus and thus cannot run for president.
