Judicial experts in Grodno region encountered a rare case: a kidney stone of impressive size, approximately 4 centimeters in diameter (for comparison, a golf ball's diameter is 4.2 cm), was submitted for examination.

This stone was surgically removed from a Grodno resident. To determine the precise chemical composition of the stone, which is a key step in diagnosis and prescribing further treatment, the patient turned to chemical experts. The size of the stone also sparked particular interest, reports the State Forensic Examination Committee.

"Knowing the exact composition will allow doctors to choose the most effective treatment, adjust the diet, and prevent the formation of new stones in the future," notes Yelizaveta Radzivon, Deputy Head of the Department of Laboratory Research of Biological Evidence.

During the examination, judicial experts found that the stone had a mixed composition, containing oxalates, phosphates, and calcium ions. This type of kidney stone is the most common in people.

Grodno chemical experts were the first among all regional departments of the SFEC to propose a method for determining the chemical composition of kidney stones, and since October 2016, they have been conducting the corresponding examination, having developed methodological recommendations. This service immediately sparked interest among citizens. To this day, it remains popular because the research results help urologists understand the causes of urolithiasis and select an appropriate diet for the patient to minimize the risk of recurrence.

Annually, the regional expert department conducts, on average, more than 100 studies of the chemical composition of kidney stones.
