Recently, the National Center for Personal Data Protection of Belarus reported that people started contacting it with questions about the collection of passport data when ordering goods on the Russian marketplace Ozon, and advised people not to send scans or copies of passports. The Belarusian representative office of the marketplace explained to Newgrodno.by what exactly they meant.

If a buyer orders goods on Ozon.by from a seller from abroad, meaning outside the EAEU, such an order must undergo customs clearance. For this, the buyer is offered to enter passport data into a special form in their personal account.

At the same time, Ozon emphasizes that the company does not ask to upload a scan or copy of a passport.

In rare cases, customs authorities may additionally request a copy of the passport through delivery partners who handle document processing when crossing the border.

The company also noted that the information entered through the form is stored only for the duration of the goods' delivery, within the EAEU countries, and in a protected form — in accordance with Belarusian legislation. After the order is received, the data is allegedly deleted. An exception is possible only if the buyer themselves wishes to keep them in their profile for future orders from abroad.
