Red bananas have been brought to Belarus. What are they?
Unusual berry bananas have appeared in Belarusian stores. They differ from ordinary ones in their red skin and taste, writes "Onliner".
These red bananas are sold in "Evroopt" on Dzerzhinsky Avenue, 3B. They were brought from Ecuador, the price per kilogram is 10.99 rubles, which is almost twice as expensive as ordinary ones. One banana from such a bunch will cost about 1.5 rubles.
The texture of a red banana is more buttery and creamy than an ordinary one, with berry notes in the taste. This means there are differences from classic fruit, but not fundamental ones.
The publication Telegraf.news, in turn, explains that red bananas are not a product of genetic engineering or marketing experiments. In fact, it is a whole group of natural varieties that have existed in nature for hundreds of years.
All modern bananas originate from two wild species: Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana. Red bananas belong to Musa acuminata. They are less common in stores because they ripen unevenly and require more careful handling. Therefore, they are considered "inconvenient" for mass export.
By the way, red bananas ripen longer. And it may happen that you bought them while they were still hard. In this case, it is best to leave the bananas to ripen at room temperature. Because a ripe red banana should be slightly soft to the touch, and its skin may even become almost brown. It is in this state that it is maximally tasty.
Red bananas contain 3-5 times more beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A, critically important for eye health and strong immunity. It is responsible for the orange-pink color of the pulp. They also have 15-20% more vitamin C.
Also, red bananas often have a slightly lower glycemic index (around 45-50 compared to 55-60 for yellow ones), because they contain more resistant starch, which breaks down more slowly.
