Mikalai Statkevich's release became known on February 19. On January 21, he suffered a stroke in the penal colony. In an interview with LRT.lt, Maryna Adamovich reported that the head of the prison hospital told her she could take Mikalai home for him to continue recovering at home.
However, the politician remains without a passport and official documents, which hinders full treatment.
Mikalai Statkevich was detained on May 31, 2020, while he was on his way to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya's rally in Kamarouka.
On December 14, 2021, at a closed trial in Homiel, he was sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment in a special regime colony on charges of organizing mass riots.
On September 11, 2025, Statkevich was unexpectedly released along with 51 other political prisoners, and there was an attempt to forcibly expel him to Lithuania. Statkevich, however, refused to cross the border and remained in Belarus. After he was taken away by Lukashenka's security forces, nothing was known about his fate.
