According to witness information, around 3 PM on November 7, a car at high speed drove onto the Market Square in the very center of Krakow. A man in a mask was inside the car and opened fire on people. Passers-by began to flee and hide in cafes, restaurants, and building entrances.
As Onet found out, Michał O. had a permit to store two firearms. He was driving a car registered to his 52-year-old father, a resident of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship (voivodeship center - Kielce). The father also had a firearms permit and owned as many as eleven weapons. Neither the father nor the son had previously come to the attention of law enforcement agencies.
During the arrest, the attacker was wounded by police officers. He is currently in the hospital, and his condition is stable.
According to Katarzyna Cisło, spokeswoman for the Lesser Poland Voivodeship Police Headquarters, the man was dressed in military-style clothing and used a long-barreled firearm similar to a military weapon. It might have been an AR-15 self-loading rifle. Police found many other weapons and ammunition in his car.
A military backpack, pouches, and a bayonet were also found in the trunk.
Immediately after the attack, versions emerged that the shooter had previously served in the Polish army. However, the Minister of National Defense of Poland, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, unequivocally denied this information:
«The man was not and is not a soldier of the Polish Army and never had anything to do with the army.»
