Liechtenstein has become the victim of a major cyberattack, which resulted in the theft of data belonging to 31,000 people. The country's government announced this on Sunday, August 2, at a press conference, DW writes.
Unknown individuals hacked the "Register of Economically Entitled Persons" (VwbP), which stored copies of data of individuals associated with companies, foundations, and trusts, reported the Austrian broadcasting corporation ORF.
The register on the LLV.li website is currently unavailable to users. The page states that "technical work" is being carried out.
On July 30, attackers illegally gained access to the VwbP. Following this, a comprehensive analysis of the incident was initiated.
On Friday, July 31, the government was informed that a successful cyberattack may have occurred. On Saturday, August 1, the first confirmed results of the preliminary investigation were handed over to the authorities.
The authorities announced the creation of an anti-crisis headquarters. It is headed by Prime Minister Brigitte Haas and Minister of Justice Emanuel Schädler.
The government reported that the register was maintained for the purpose of preventing money laundering and terrorist financing. The motives of the cybercriminals are currently being investigated.
