Russia attacked six Ukrainian providers in two days. Part of Kyiv left without internet
On September 23-24, Russian troops attacked the infrastructure of four internet providers in Ukraine — UTELS, "Pavutyny", Etherlink, Crazy Network, as well as two hosting providers — Cityhost and MiroHost. Internet outages are observed in Kyiv and the region, writes Moscow Times.
On Thursday, Etherlink, which serves the central part of the capital, reported damage to its main network node and a decision to move it to another location. The timeframe for internet service restoration has not been announced.
In addition, Russian military forces destroyed the data center of hosting provider MiroHost. Its founder, Alexander Olshansky, warned that this could cause problems with accessing websites hosted on its servers. Cityhost's infrastructure also sustained damage.
On September 23, as a result of a Russian attack, the data centers of UTELS and "Pavutyny" were damaged, causing internet outages for approximately 100,000 households in Kyiv and the region, reported the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine. An internet traffic exchange node in the capital was also hit, leading to problems for Crazy Network clients in Vinnytsia and Khmelnytskyi regions.
The damaged data centers belong to civilian infrastructure, which provides access to information and air threat warnings. The rapid delivery of messages about missile and drone attacks is crucial for people to find shelter in time.
The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed strikes on September 24 on the telecommunications centers "Kyivstar" and "Parkovy", stating that they provide communication services and computing power for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russia has been attacking Ukrainian communications infrastructure for several weeks.
On September 15, a drone damaged the BeMobile data center in Kyiv, causing problems with websites hosted at UCloud, including the portal of the National Paralympic Committee of Ukraine. On September 17, another commercial data center was reported hit, and on September 19, De Novo, one of Ukraine's largest commercial data centers, came under attack.
Anatoliy Frolenkov, a representative of an internet traffic exchange point, noted that Russian attacks on Ukrainian telecommunications infrastructure have become systemic. According to him, the enemy's current priority is communication nodes in Kyiv, and in the future, similar facilities in the west of the country will become targets.
Ukrainian providers have already started warning customers about rising service costs. The owner of UTELS stated that stable internet for 300-350 hryvnias (6-7 dollars) per month will be a thing of the past. According to him, operators providing backup power and communication channels cannot continue to work at previous tariffs.
