Following the terrorist attack in Sydney at Bondi Beach, in which 15 people died, media reports have emerged about a man whose courage apparently prevented even more casualties.

43-year-old Ahmed al-Ahmed, a fruit store owner and migrant from Syria, threw himself at one of the attackers and took his rifle.

During the shooting, which took place during the Hanukkah celebration, Ahmed al-Ahmed pounced on the shooter and snatched the weapon from his hands. The attacker was then forced to retreat.

Ahmed sustained gunshot wounds to his arm and is in hospital after surgery.

Ahmed's shop was closed on Monday, but customers and neighbors gathered around it to pay their respects to him.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called Ahmed a true hero, stressing that his courage saved many lives.

A GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign has been launched to support Ahmed and his family, which has already raised more than $500,000. Among the major donors is American billionaire Bill Ackman, who donated $100,000.
