A global interactive service about castles, palaces, and fortresses has emerged. Belarusian ones are also included
A new interactive service Castle Map has appeared online, which has gathered over 7700 castles, fortresses, and palaces from 141 countries on one map. Belarusian monuments have also made it into the international atlas — a total of 39 objects, writes Domovita.by.
The service was created by a developer known by the nickname Flightmussy. The database includes not all historical buildings indiscriminately, but only those for which there are accurate coordinates, photographs, and descriptions in several language sections of Wikipedia. At the time of publication, there were 7738 objects on the map.
The largest number of castles and other similar monuments is found in Spain — about 600. The top ten also include France, Germany, and Great Britain. The only Asian country in this top was Japan.
Objects on the map are divided into several categories: castles and palaces, defensive fortresses and forts, as well as ruins.
A separate ranking shows the popularity of historical objects. It is determined based on user interest and the number of mentions online.
The highest place among Belarusian monuments was taken by Brest Fortress — 285th in the world ranking. According to the map creators, it is more popular than 92% of all objects included in the atlas. Over the past two months, information about the fortress was requested almost 10 thousand times.
After Brest Fortress, the Belarusian list includes Nesvizh Castle and Old Grodno Castle.
In total, 24 castles, 2 fortresses, 5 palaces, and 8 ruins are marked on the map of Belarus. For 33 monuments, their exact founding dates are indicated — from the 10th century to the mid-20th century. The largest number of objects on the list dates back to the 16th century: 10 monuments belong to this period.
The map also shows the geographical distribution of Belarusian castles and palaces. Their highest concentration is observed around Minsk: 11 structures are located within a 100-kilometer radius of the capital. A significant group of historical objects is also located in the Brest region.
The distance between the northernmost object in Ikazn and the southernmost in Davyd-Haradok is almost 400 kilometers.
