Starlink station in Poland providing internet access to Ukraine catches fire. Sabotage not ruled out
On the evening of September 23, a fire broke out on the territory of a Starlink satellite communication ground station in Wola Krokowska, Mazovian Voivodeship. This infrastructure provides internet access for a significant part of Central and Eastern Europe, including Ukraine, RMF24 reports .
The owner of the territory where the equipment is located reported the fire to emergency services. According to him, antennas caught fire, and a generator was also damaged. Firefighters arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire.
According to preliminary conclusions by the services, one of the possible causes could have been deliberate arson of the distribution device. At the same time, a short circuit in the electrical system is also being considered as a version.
Police officers from preventive service units and employees of the voivodeship commandant's office were dispatched to the scene. The incident was also reported to the Internal Security Agency and the Central Police Investigation Bureau. Police technicians continue to collect and secure traces at the fire scene, and employees of the preventive service are patrolling the nearby village.
On the station's territory, there are about a dozen white ball-shaped antennas, approximately two meters in diameter. The entire area is enclosed by a metal fence.
The station in Wola Krokowska, along with a similar facility near Kaunas in Lithuania, provides internet to a significant part of Central and Eastern Europe.
Polish Digitalization Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski stated that much points to the version of a deliberate attempt to disrupt the station's operation. He noted that the facility is managed by the state telecommunications operator Exatel, which is involved in ensuring internet security and transmits internet, including to Ukraine.
According to Gawkowski, disabling such stations could lead to internet outages and, as a result, affect, for example, the operation of ATMs. The minister emphasized that such telecommunication transmitters can determine whether there will be internet in a certain part of Poland, Europe, or Ukraine.
