According to Alexander Kazarez, the department's research shows that the frequency of incidents depends not so much on the density of animals in the area as on the intensity of traffic flow.
"The greatest risk arises on high-speed highways with the M index, as well as on roads around regional centers and Minsk. Even with a low number of animals, the probability of a collision here is higher due to the significant volume of traffic," he emphasized.
Near nature reserves, national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries, the situation is relatively calm due to moderate traffic intensity, added the head of the department. "However, the probability of encountering an animal in these areas remains high, so drivers need to choose their speed considering the road conditions, especially during twilight hours. We recommend not exceeding 60-70 km/h," he said.
Alexander Kazarez noted that wild animals, particularly elk, have a specific psychophysiology of behavior and do not always quickly make adequate decisions.
Last year, more than 5 thousand wild animals died in road accidents. In 2024, this number was about 3 thousand animals.
Last year, about 3 thousand roe deer died.
Furthermore, up to 40% of elk and roe deer die precisely in the period from April to June. "This is a very high number. We, of course, urge all drivers to be especially careful, particularly during twilight and nighttime hours, because it is at this time that animal activity increases, and they die," Alexander Kazarez noted.
