Former Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has died at the age of 73. His death was announced by the press service of the VTB United League, where he was honorary president, and also chairman of the Board of Directors of CSKA Basketball Club.
Sergei Ivanov was born in Leningrad on January 31, 1953. He graduated from the translation faculty of Leningrad University and the military department attached to it.
In 1975, he was recruited into the KGB and a year later graduated from the KGB Higher Courses in Minsk (today - the Academy of National Security).
Also in the 1970s, he was sent to London to study English at the Ealing College School of Liberal Arts in London.
From 1976 to 1977, he was an employee of the 1st Department of the KGB Directorate for Leningrad and the Leningrad region, where he worked in the same unit as Vladimir Putin. He worked until 1985 in residencies in Finland and then in Kenya (where, according to his own words, he was transferred due to his exposure in Europe by Oleg Gordievsky).
From 1991 to 1998, he continued to work in the Foreign Intelligence Service of Russia. He served as Deputy Director of the FSB, Secretary of the Security Council.
He was the Minister of Defense of Russia from 2001 to 2007, a period entirely "vegetarian" by today's standards.
From 2007 to 2008, he was the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, and from 2011 to 2016, he headed the Administration of the President of Russia. His last position was Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Environmental Activities, Ecology, and Transport (2016-2026).
He and Dmitry Medvedev were considered the main candidates for the position of temporary successor to Vladimir Putin in 2008.
Putin bet on Medvedev, who at the time was considered much more liberal than his rivals.
