Earlier, US President Donald Trump's envoy Paolo Zampolli put forward the initiative. He stated that the Italian national football team, as a four-time world champion, could get a place in the tournament even without qualifying. However, this idea did not find support within FIFA itself.
The head of the organization, Gianni Infantino, previously emphasized that the Iranian national football team "will definitely participate" in the tournament.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States would welcome the Iranian team at the World Cup.
In Tehran, they assure that the team is ready for the competition and plans to perform without restrictions.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup starts on June 11 and will be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The Iranian national team is scheduled to play its group stage matches in the USA.
