Three People Detained in Lithuania Who Came to the Forest to Collect Contraband Cigarettes from Belarus
In the Alytus district of Lithuania, border guards intercepted a large batch of cigarettes delivered from Belarus by weather balloons and detained three people who came to pick up the cargo.
On Monday evening, officers of the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania discovered a large bag of contraband and set up an ambush.
Two hours later, a minivan arrived for the cargo with three residents of Alytus. The detainees are 24, 35, and 38 years old. One of them had recently been deported from Ireland and has no permanent place of residence.
Inside the bag, 24 cardboard boxes (12 thousand packs) of "NZ Gold" and "Minsk Superslims" cigarettes from Grodno Tobacco Factory "Neman" were found. The total value of the contraband, including taxes, is over 65.5 thousand euros.
A criminal case has been initiated for smuggling and illegal trafficking of excise goods.
Two of the detainees were released on bail after interrogation, while the court remanded the third for three months.
The culprits face a fine or imprisonment for up to 8 years.
