Over the next two years, the country plans to deploy about ten satellites that will be used for reconnaissance near the Russian borders and monitoring military activity in the region, reports Swedish TV channel SVT.
“The new armed forces satellite is part of the military space program,” stated the Swedish Armed Forces. Stockholm can now independently detect and analyze global threats.
The launch took place on Sunday from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. It was carried out by Elon Musk's company SpaceX.
The head of the Swedish Armed Forces' space division, Anders Sundeman, called the launch an important step.
“We gain the ability to ourselves control and prioritize long-range reconnaissance. This is a serious enhancement of capabilities,” he said.
