EU diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas stated today that the American embassy has left Kyiv, while European diplomatic missions will remain in the Ukrainian capital.
"Yesterday we learned that all embassies, except one, remained in Ukraine. So this also requires courage from embassy staff. But yes, all Europeans have stayed. America has left," she said upon arrival at an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Cyprus.
Later, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted to her words. The spokesperson for the department, Heorhiy Tikhiy, informed journalists that the information about the departure of the US Embassy from Kyiv does not correspond to reality.
Adviser to the President of Ukraine on Communications Dmytro Litvin called the situation "strange," as Ukraine should not interpret the words of the EU diplomacy chief about the USA. He suggested that there might have been information about the departure before Russia's strike on Kyiv on Sunday night.
"We heard that American diplomats left Kyiv then (before the strike on Sunday night). In any case, Ukraine is grateful to all embassies working in Kyiv," Litvin noted.
Later, the US Embassy denied the information about the departure, stating that it continues to operate in Kyiv as before.
