Italy warned Spain about readiness to suspend the Schengen agreement
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reacted this way to the situation in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on the coast of Africa, where hundreds of migrants are fleeing from Morocco.
Italy is ready to take emergency measures to protect its borders and the security of its citizens, including suspending the Schengen Area in relations with Spain, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on the social network X.
"The images coming from Ceuta are striking and once again demonstrate that uncontrolled illegal immigration poses a real threat to the security of Europe's borders," she explained.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Italy will not deviate from its principles on illegal immigration: "Border protection, the fight against human trafficking, and ensuring effective repatriation will continue to be the red line of our government."
