In Bryansk Oblast, a Belarusian pushed a log on the road — and became an accidental victim of the war

Vladimir Sergeev's three children were initially denied compensation, as payments are only provided for the deaths of Russian citizens.

The tragic incident occurred on April 12, 2025, in the village of Kirillovka, Klimovsky District, Bryansk Oblast, Russia. This village is located 3 kilometers from Ukraine.

A local resident, Belarusian citizen Vladimir Sergeev, pushed some log on the road, and it exploded. The man died on the spot, while his wife Marina received a mild concussion and was taken to the district hospital.

Russian authorities blamed the Armed Forces of Ukraine for everything, called the incident a terrorist act against civilians, and the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case.

Vladimir Sergeev's children — there are three of them, including a minor son — applied for compensation for their father as a war victim, but were initially denied.

Officials stated that payments are only made for deceased Russian citizens. Sergeev only had a permanent residence permit in Russia, but he had not applied for citizenship.

The Klimovsky District Court also held this view. However, the Bryansk Oblast Court interpreted the law differently — assistance is paid not to the deceased himself, but to his family members who are citizens of Russia.

Standard Bryansk assistance to families of those killed by shelling amounts to approximately 16 thousand euros and is divided equally among all family members.
