Belarusian hasn't used shampoo for a year — and is happy with his hair
Dzianis Zialianko shared on Facebook how he embarked on radical cosmetic measures. The man hasn't used shampoo for over a year and says that his hair has only improved during this time.

When Dzianis started the experiment, he complained about oily hair, dandruff, and an itchy scalp. Anti-dandruff shampoos helped partially — Dzianis used both mass-market products like Head&Shoulders and medicinal shampoo "Nizoral". But his scalp eventually got used to the shampoos, and he had to look for a new remedy.
Accordingly, Dzianis was looking for the simplest way to solve his hair problems, and, in the man's opinion, giving up shampoo could be such an option. The Belarusian explains this approach by saying that ancient people didn't have any shampoos, and hair, like the scalp, can maintain itself in order. Therefore, Dzianis was interested to see how his hair would feel "on factory settings".
At first, it was difficult:
"A few days after the last shower with shampoo, I noticed an increase in oiliness on my hair, which is logical. Subsequent showers without shampoo slightly reduced that oiliness.
For the first couple of weeks, there was a distinct feeling of a cap on my head. The sensations screamed — 'we have a very oily head, pour shampoo on it immediately!'"
Dzianis perceived those sensations as a signal that a protective barrier had returned to his scalp. This is how the man describes the sebum (oil) produced by the sebaceous glands on the head. That sebum protects the hair and scalp, and shampoo, accordingly, washes away its excess.
For a couple of weeks, Dzianis admits, he "walked around and suffered," as his hair was oily and heavy. And then something interesting happened:
"After subsequent showers, the amount of oil began to decrease, my hair became shiny, soft, and loose, as if after shampoo.
The system came into balance. The amount of oil produced decreased because it was no longer being washed away by detergents. Which means it doesn't need to be intensely replenished."
Now Dzianis washes his hair only with clean water, and his hair looks the same, no matter how much time has passed since the last wash. There is also no feeling of oiliness, the man assures on Facebook.
Dzianis advises those who read his post to also try, at least temporarily, to give up hair detergents.
"The vast majority don't know what their hair is actually like. Because to find out, you need to remove the chemical load from your hair, give your scalp a few weeks to stabilize the system and return to its original natural mode."
Currently, under Dzianis's post, there are over five hundred comments. Many were critical of his idea:
"Changing underwear — that's nonsense too, I think."
"I can imagine how smelly the hair is."
And some shared that they had tried similar experiments.
Dzianis clarifies in the comments that he himself doubted the smell, so he sometimes showed his hair to acquaintances and asked them to describe its condition. They found no bad smell, but dandruff remained, though in significantly smaller amounts.
When asked to give up shampoos themselves, female acquaintances replied that they wouldn't be able to do it.
Now Dzianis washes his hair every time he takes a shower — but only with water.
