Traces of a mid-1st millennium armed conflict unearthed in Vileika district

The discovery was made during the annual archaeological practice of students from the BSU Faculty of History. Excavations are taking place near the village of Rechki, Vileika district, under the guidance of Polina Kurlovich, head of the Department of Archaeology and Special Historical Disciplines, the BSU press service reports .

During their research, scientists discovered remnants of fortifications destroyed by fire. Among them is an earthen rampart, on which a wooden wall once stood. Arrowheads were also found in this location, indicating that the hillfort might have burned down as a result of a military clash.

The artifacts found in the fire layer allow these events to be tentatively attributed to the Migration Period (Great Migration of Peoples) — approximately the 4th to the first half of the 5th centuries.

In addition, archaeologists are studying an unfortified settlement near the foot of the hillfort. There, they are finding various objects from that era: iron and clay tools, clothing elements, bone artifacts, and ceramic pottery.

The expedition in Rechki will continue until July 28. After the completion of the work, the discovered artifacts will be transferred to the educational laboratory for museum affairs of the BSU Faculty of History, where they will be further studied and then included in the museum's exhibition.
