A group of men in Ostrava attacked a cyclist because of his headwear, the colors of which they mistakenly took for the colors of the Ukrainian flag. The incident occurred during a charity event to raise funds for the treatment of the guy's pregnant girlfriend, who had fallen ill with cancer. The publicity helped raise the necessary amount overnight.
On the evening of September 11, in the Czech city of Ostrava, Polish citizens beat up 36-year-old Kuba Heisig from Chorzów. According to information from Dziennik Zachodni, the attack occurred when the man was returning from a store. He received an unexpected blow to the head, was knocked to the ground, and brutally kicked.
The attackers mistook his yellow-blue hat for the Ukrainian flag, began to insult the man and shout that he was "Ukrainian and a Banderite". The aggressors were not deterred even by the inscription "GÓRNY ŚLĄSK" on the headwear.
Heisig started on September 9 on a cargo bike. The 800-kilometer route intentionally ran along the historical borders of Upper Silesia so that the man could quickly return home in case his partner's condition worsened.
The goal of the "Rajza dla Marceliny" campaign was to raise 300 thousand zlotys for 30-year-old pregnant mother of three Marcelina. She was diagnosed with stage three malignant cervical cancer, complicated by thrombosis against the background of severe chemotherapy.
The collected funds were intended for unreimbursed medicines, medical nutrition, and family support, as the couple was forced to stop and limit their work activities.
The color scheme of the hat fully corresponds to the traditional symbolism of Upper Silesia: the region has a yellow-blue flag and a coat of arms with a golden eagle on a blue shield. After the beating, the victim was taken to the hospital for examination. The case was handed over to the Czech police, who are currently investigating the circumstances of the attack.
Initially, media reported the complete halt of the bike ride and the man's return home, but after several hours at the police station, Heisig continued his route.
The publication of information about the beating caused a surge in donations on the Pomagam.pl platform, thanks to which the entire amount for treatment was collected overnight with a significant surplus.
According to LIGA.net, in the first half of 2026, Polish police registered 180 reports of hate crimes against Ukrainians, which is 30 percent more than in the same period last year.
