In Germany, a man 'hired' ChatGPT as a lawyer. He managed to win the case

41-year-old Leipzig resident David Hinz managed to get a criminal case closed by using a chatbot as a lawyer, BILD writes .

41-year-old security guard David Hinz faced fraud charges. In 2023, he started a new job a week earlier than planned. Although Hinz informed the employment agency about this by phone, he was mistakenly overpaid unemployment benefits — a total of 242.34 euros. This became the basis for the accusation.

The accused was not provided with the right to a free public defender, and hiring a private lawyer was too expensive, so Hinz decided to defend himself — with the help of AI.

ChatGPT explained the legal intricacies of the process to him, helped him formulate an objection, and worked with him for a week on an 18-page motion regarding the judge's bias, which was ultimately granted. The case was transferred to another judge, and the proceedings were subsequently dropped. Exactly how ChatGPT influenced the outcome of the case remains an open question.

However, a study conducted at Stanford shows that AI is already proving beneficial in the legal field: it was found that lawyers using AI assistants worked 6% more accurately and approximately 26% faster. AI was involved in searching for evidence and pointing out possible errors, but the final decisions remained with humans.
