"Another tragedy. The outstanding Belarusian artist Uladzislau Stalmakhau, who recently lived near Warsaw, is no more," wrote writer and journalist Ales Arkush on his Facebook page.
Artist Uladzislau Stalmakhau died on August 26. As far as is known, the cause was acute heart failure — the ambulance did not manage to save him.
Uladzislau Stalmakhau was born in 1970.
He graduated from the Minsk Radio Engineering Institute. During his studies, he worked as an artist-designer and simultaneously received professional art training.
As early as 1991, Stalmakhau participated in unofficial art exhibitions in Minsk and Vitebsk. From the late 1990s, he began to actively exhibit solo. His works were shown in Belarus, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Russia, and later in Poland and France. He held more than two dozen solo exhibitions.
Stalmakhau is often called a primitive artist, but this definition only partially describes him. He consciously uses the language of naive art: he violates realistic proportions, does not strive for correct perspective, and makes people resemble characters from fairy tales or urban folklore.
