Renowned Director Zvyagintsev Declared "Foreign Agent" in Russia
The Ministry of Justice of Russia has added film director Andrey Zvyagintsev to the register of "foreign agents." The ministry stated that the reason was his participation in the creation of materials and messages for a wide range of people, associated with other "foreign agents," as well as with organizations whose activities Russian authorities have recognized as undesirable.

Andrey Zvyagintsev is one of the most famous and acclaimed Russian film directors. His debut film "The Return" received the main award of the Venice Film Festival, the "Golden Lion," in 2003. The film "Leviathan," released in 2014, received an award for best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival, a Golden Globe, and an Oscar nomination. The 2017 film "Loveless" was also nominated for an Oscar and received the Jury Prize in Cannes.
In May 2026, Zvyagintsev's new film "Minotaur" received the Grand Prix at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. France nominated it for an Academy Award.
During the award ceremony, Zvyagintsev addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin with an appeal to stop the war in Ukraine. The director stated that people on both sides of the contact line want an end to the killings and urged Putin to stop the war.
