Some ATMs in Belarus do not accept 100-ruble banknotes. What's the problem?
In Belarus, some ATMs have temporarily stopped accepting 100-ruble banknotes of the new 2022 series. The problem was noticed by social media users, and one Alfa-Bank client even published a photo of an ATM message: "Banknotes with a face value of 100 BYN of the 2022 series are temporarily not accepted,"Telegraf.news reported.
As of today, two designs of 100-ruble banknotes are in circulation — the 2009 series (issued in 2016) and the 2022 series. Their design is similar, but the new banknotes have differences: there is no signature of the National Bank Chairman, and other anti-counterfeiting elements are present. Both designs are legal tender.
Problems with the new 100-ruble banknotes are arising not only for Alfa-Bank clients but also in other banks, as well as when paying at gas station terminals (for example, the A100 network) and mobile operator terminals.
The Alfa-Bank press service explained the reason: some ATMs of Western manufacture do not support the new banknotes because the manufacturers have left Belarus and no longer service the equipment. Therefore, it is difficult for banks to configure validators for the new design.
All new devices, however, already accept the new banknotes, and old ATMs will gradually be phased out, but this requires time. A similar problem previously arose in other banks, for example, Belinvestbank, where it was explained by limited servicing of American Diebold Nixdorf ATMs with cash-recycling function.
The issue has not yet been fully resolved under Western sanctions, so banks are simply gradually replacing "problematic" machines as they wear out.
